So I've read the owner's manual and I don't like th 1,000 mile under 4k RPM break in idea.

If you've ever seen a Corvette factory on TV or in person, you know they throw their cars on the dyno and WEAR IT OUT as soon as it comes off the production line. For this reason, I trust the article and think it is sound in concept. This is how I will break in my BRZ... I'm a member of bimmerforums.com (drive an E36 M3 on the weekends) and a lot of members there use this procedure after re-building an engine with plent of success.
