Lets Get Controversial... Engine Break In...

So I've read the owner's manual and I don't like th 1,000 mile under 4k RPM break in idea.

If you've ever seen a Corvette factory on TV or in person, you know they throw their cars on the dyno and WEAR IT OUT as soon as it comes off the production line. For this reason, I trust the article and think it is sound in concept. This is how I will break in my BRZ... I'm a member of bimmerforums.com (drive an E36 M3 on the weekends) and a lot of members there use this procedure after re-building an engine with plent of success.

Are they going to be running each BRZ engine through the power band after they're manufactured, or are they just going to drop it in, start it up, and drive it off the line?

With my ATV's, I'd break them in hard but gradually increase RPM in the beginning.

I hear both, baby the car or run it hard. I think there is a balance between the two.

I broke in my STI with the 1,000 mile under 4k rpm in the back of my mind. I just bought the car, so I did not hoon the crap out of it, but at the same time I didn't pussy foot it around. The first time I drove the car, I did a 400 mile road trip, so that was a great break in, operating temps at high speed for extended periods of time and some great mountain roads, which used every gear. To this day my STI runs great and I have no issues, plenty of power.

I think one of the biggest issue with break in, is the fact that people don't drive the car long enough for the engine to get to operating temp to seal the engine completely. I suggest a road trip for break in, it is a fun experience with a new car too.

I am against driving off the lot and immediately taking it to redline. That just looks and sounds dumb, imo.

Subaru recommends the under 4k rpm for the first 1,000 miles for liability. So if you blow it up, they can ask weather you broke it in properly, and if not, they are not liable.

In the end, find the balance and remember that you just spent a ton of money on for a long term investment. Be smart.

I agree! If I'm paying $30000 for any car I would break it in properply.
