TORRANCE, California — Toyota is recalling 1,156 2013 Scion FR-S vehicles and Subaru is recalling 1,600 BRZs to fix an error in the wording of the owner's manual regarding the operation of the airbag system, according to Toyota, Subaru of America and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"It is a really small matter," wrote Toyota spokesman Mike Michels in response to an e-mailed query from Inside Line on Thursday. "There is an error in the owners' manual regarding the operation of the airbag system. It has to do with federally required wording. Subaru, as the manufacturer, actually provides the owner's manual and was the company filing the non-compliance information report. Owners will be provided with corrected owner's manuals. There is absolutely no safety issue or actual defect with the cars."
Subaru of America spokesman Dominick Infante told Inside Line in a phone conversation on Thursday that there is "no danger in driving the car. It is not a mechanical issue."
"The BRZ has a special kind of (airbag) system that weighs passengers in the front seat," he said. "It doesn't make clear the difference between a child and small female (in the owner's manual). It's the way it was explained in the manual. There have been no accidents or anything."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted a notification about a 2013 FR-S recall on its Web site on Thursday and listed the number of units, along with the fact that the problem concerned the owner's manual. But it said more information would be posted tomorrow. There was no information about a 2013 Subaru BRZ recall on the NHTSA Web site.
Inside Line says: If you own a 2013 Scion FR-S or 2013 Subaru BRZ, expect to get a one-page insert for your owner's manual correctly explaining how the airbag system works.
