    New Intake

One company producing an Intake for the BRZ/FRS is www.aFepower.com and they have a group buy on till 8/15...the code is ft86club. I am NOT suggesting this IS for you, just putting the info out there to be investigated. They have a large product line of intakes and filters, in the industry, and may be just what you were looking for... There is also Injen and others but I don't know of any other group buys.

    Re: New Intake

When I was designing the CAI for my Volvo R series car, I used a manometer to determine the pre filter vacuum. That design went on to become from ipD sells now. I'll have to look at the stock system on our cars. Often, the filter cross sectional area is less an issue than the feed to it.

    Re: New Intake

Watching the different designs being developed with the help of a dyno has shown only small improvements so far, not that more would be expected. I know that when I was doing that development I was using a remote thermometer with the intent of having a large plenum in front of the filter to minimize the turbulence...fluid dynamics is an amazing science, but cold air to the intake is most important, unless you talk to Smokey and his adiabatic system.

    Re: New Intake

You're right about temperature but that tends to be a bigger issue on trbocharged cars where every degree of heat into the system, whether is be ambient, soaked, heat of compression or whatever all nets out. Typically, unless the intake of a NA car is really poorly designed, things are no so bad. Ironically, many of the aftermarket cone filter designs actually end up raising the IAT (intake air temp) on both NA and Turbo.

    Re: New Intake

    A few related thoughts:

    - a sim on the motor shows that it flows about 300 cfm at max HP.
    - the OEM air filter is about 38 sq in, calculations suggest we need 36 for 200 hp
    - if there is vacuum in the air box before the filter at any time, the intake path/snorkel is inadequate
    - if the the temp before the filter is > ambient, it's ingesting engine heat
    - Dyno tests can be flawed as the effects of frontal pressure from road speed are not included

    Re: New Intake

aFe Power and Injen both currently make excellent air intake systems for the BRZ/FR-S. HKS will be releasing their air intake system this November, and ECG Tuning will be one of the first to have it available and in stock to ship out to you.

I would like to see a true ram air intake system like vararam before I would consider buying one.

    Re: New Intake

Have you seen the new AEM Cold Air Intake for the BRZ / FR-S? It's probably the closest thing to a "true ram" intake for the BRZ. It utilizes the factory air scoop and funnels the air into a completely enclosed air box, and into a high flow cone filter.

There are some pictures of it. It produces some of the best power gains for the BRZ and FR-S. AEM dyno showed gains of +10 HP & +8.3 ft/lbs of Torque.
